A man is in custody in Georgia and awaiting extradition in connection with a homicide in Elizabeth, New Jersey, News 12 reported. The arrest, made hundreds of miles from where the killing took place, marks a significant step in a case that prosecutors have now formally pursued as a murder charge against the suspect.
Prosecutors say Brian Calderon is charged with murder in the death of 23-year-old Franklin Mendez. The charge identifies Calderon as the man authorities allege was responsible for the killing of the young victim, and it sets the stage for the legal proceedings that will follow once the suspect is returned to New Jersey to answer it.
According to authorities, the shooting that claimed Mendez's life happened on Saturday morning. The killing took place on Caldwell Place, turning a stretch of the Elizabeth neighborhood into the scene of a deadly shooting that investigators have worked to piece together in the days since the young man was killed there.
The suspect is from Rahway, New Jersey, a city in the same part of the state as Elizabeth. His local ties place him within the same region where the homicide occurred, even though he would ultimately be taken into custody far beyond New Jersey's borders rather than near the scene of the crime itself.
Calderon was taken into custody in Georgia, where he is now being held. His arrest in another state, well to the south of New Jersey, indicated that the search for the suspect had extended across state lines before authorities were able to locate him and detain him in connection with the Elizabeth killing.
He is now awaiting extradition, the process by which he is expected to be returned from Georgia to New Jersey to face the murder charge filed against him. Until that transfer is carried out, the case remains in a holding pattern, with the formal court proceedings set to move forward once he is back in the state where the homicide took place.
With a suspect now identified and in custody, the focus of the case turns to the extradition and the prosecution that lies ahead. The death of Franklin Mendez, killed at the age of 23, remains the center of the investigation as authorities prepare to bring Calderon back to New Jersey to answer the charge against him.
