A man was shot and killed after a large party in Katy descended into violence just after midnight, leaving a 45-year-old dead and prompting a homicide investigation. Harris County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home on Sandal Springs Drive, near Clay Road and just around the corner from Katy Park, where they found that gunfire had cut the gathering short.
According to investigators, a violent brawl had broken out between a group of people inside the home in the moments before the shooting. What had been a party gave way to a heated confrontation, and the dispute quickly escalated toward the deadly turn that followed.
At some point during the fight, deputies say, one person walked out of the house to a vehicle, grabbed a gun, and came back. They opened fire on the 45-year-old man, shooting him multiple times before fleeing the scene on foot and disappearing into the night.
Investigators said the shooting did not appear to be random. They believe the gunman specifically targeted the man who was killed, singling him out amid the chaos rather than firing indiscriminately into the crowd of people who had gathered at the home.
The victim, described as a father, was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies who arrived found a gathering that had turned from celebration to tragedy in a matter of moments, and they began the work of documenting what had happened and speaking with those who had been present.
As part of their investigation, deputies said they were reviewing security camera video from the area in an effort to identify the gunman, who remained at large.
