Police in New York are searching for a group of people after a 17-year-old boy was beaten into a coma outside Madison Square Garden. The attack happened in the celebrations that followed the New York Knicks' Game 4 win in the NBA Finals on Wednesday night. The NYPD has released a surveillance image of one of the people believed to be involved and is appealing for help to identify the others.
The assault took place at around 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, just outside the arena in Manhattan, shortly after the Knicks had beaten the San Antonio Spurs. What began as a dispute among fans quickly turned violent on a busy sidewalk packed with people leaving the game. The location, in the heart of the city, is normally crowded late into the night after a major event at the Garden.
According to police, the confrontation started while a content creator was interviewing fans outside the arena. The exchange escalated into a verbal dispute, and a group of Knicks supporters was drawn into the argument. The 17-year-old victim became caught up in the confrontation as it spiraled out of control.
Authorities say the group then turned on the teenager, punching and kicking him repeatedly in the head and body. The attack was severe enough to leave him gravely injured within moments, and bystanders were left to watch as the violence unfolded near the arena entrance. Police described the assault as a sudden and brutal escalation of what had started as an argument.
The 17-year-old suffered a seizure and slipped into a coma as a result of the beating. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. He has since been stabilized, though the full extent of his injuries was not immediately clear.
No arrests had been made in the hours after the attack. The NYPD released an image of one of the people believed to have taken part and asked anyone with information to come forward. Investigators are working to identify the rest of the group involved in the assault.
The beating came amid the large and rowdy celebrations that have followed the Knicks deep into the NBA Finals, with crowds spilling onto the streets around Madison Square Garden after games. The violence has added to concerns about crowd safety in the area, just as city officials weigh whether to host large public watch parties for the next game in the series.
