Woman killed in shooting near Metro bus in Washington as police kill suspect

A woman was shot dead near a Metro bus in Washington, D.C., and the suspect was killed after police officers engaged him on the bus full of passengers. Officials said there was a domestic relationship between the two, and the Secret Service, patrolling the area, assisted at the scene.

A deadly shooting involving a Metro bus unfolded in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday morning, in what officials described as a situation that could have turned far more tragic given the number of people on board. Police addressed the case in a briefing alongside Metro Transit officials as the investigation got under way.

According to the authorities, a woman was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, and the case is being treated as a homicide investigation. The suspect, who was on the bus, was also pronounced dead at the scene after Metropolitan Police officers engaged him during the response.

Officials praised the way officers approached the situation, describing them as tactical in how they moved to evacuate the bus and approach the individual. With so many passengers on board, they said, the officers acted just in time to prevent a far worse outcome.

The firearm the individual was carrying had an extended magazine, which meant there was the potential for a large amount of ammunition to be used. The officers who boarded the bus were uniformed Metropolitan Police officers assigned to the city's second district, and body-worn camera footage is expected to be released in line with department policy.

The Secret Service was also in the area at the time and responded to the location. Officials noted that the agency regularly patrols the area as part of its mission to protect foreign diplomats and dignitaries, and that its agents were outside the bus when officers opened fire, later helping with management of the scene.

Investigators said there was a domestic relationship between the two people involved, although the exact nature of it was still being established. They added that there was no video of the moment available at this early stage, and that they were canvassing the area for additional footage and witnesses to understand what led to the shooting.

The shooting came after Metro bus employees had recently rallied over concerns about their safety. Metro Transit police said they had added officers to buses, increased virtual patrols and deployed both plainclothes and uniformed officers to watch over passengers and operators, and that peer support and crisis teams were on the scene to assist those affected by the incident.
