The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a troubling incident involving a JetBlue flight that had a near-miss with a small plane while approaching Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida on Monday.
According to the FAA, the small plane nearby was not communicating with air traffic control at the time of the incident. Audio recordings captured the JetBlue pilot communicating with the control tower about the unresponsive aircraft.
The JetBlue pilot reported to controllers that the traffic was descending at approximately four thousand two hundred feet. The pilot described the aircraft as appearing to be south of their position.
No collision occurred and no injuries were reported. However, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about safety in increasingly crowded airspace around major commercial airports.
The FAA routinely investigates near-miss incidents between commercial and general aviation aircraft. Such events are taken extremely seriously as they represent potential catastrophic scenarios.
This is the latest in a series of troubling incidents involving US airline operations. Aviation safety experts have been calling for modernised air traffic management systems to handle growing volumes of air traffic.
The investigation will examine why the small plane was not in communication with air traffic control and whether any regulations were violated. The FAA has not yet released additional details about the aircraft involved.
