The emergency department at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Bonney Lake was closed on Saturday after a standoff involving an armed man, according to FOX 13 Seattle. The hospital said the department was expected to reopen soon.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called in to assist Bonney Lake Police after an armed man started making threats. The situation unfolded during the morning and drew a large law enforcement response to the hospital.
Deputies said no one was in the emergency room at the time of the standoff. That detail was cited as one reason the incident did not turn into something even more dangerous inside the building.
As a precaution, hospital staff were evacuated from the area while officers dealt with the armed man. The response kept much of the focus on the emergency department, which was shut down during the incident.
The standoff ended when the suspect turned the gun on himself. According to authorities, the man survived, and there were no other reported injuries from the incident.
Officials said no other information was available for now. The hospital reiterated that the emergency department should reopen soon, once the scene was fully cleared.
