A high-altitude tragedy is unfolding on one of the world's tallest mountains. An urgent rescue is underway for a group of climbers who went missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak.
The scale of the emergency became clear as details emerged. Ten climbers were on the mountain when the avalanche hit, and rescuers have been racing to reach them.
One of those unaccounted for is from the United States. Among the missing is American climber Mallory Geis.
Also among the missing is a figure known far beyond the climbing world. The world-renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, known as Nims Dai, was part of the group; he was featured in a Netflix documentary about scaling the world's highest peaks.
The search has already turned up grim results. The bodies of four of the ten climbers have been recovered.
