Police shoot driver of stolen car in the Bronx

An 18-year-old driver was shot in the arm by police in the Fordham section of the Bronx after authorities say he drove a stolen Kia back and forth and struck a sergeant. Several officers were hurt and the driver, who was out on bail in an earlier shooting case, was arrested.

Police shot the driver of a stolen car in the Bronx on Sunday evening after a confrontation that left several officers hurt. According to the coverage, the violent scene unfolded in the Fordham section of the borough and ended with the driver wounded and in custody, while the location remained an active crime scene late into the night.

Authorities said the incident began around 5:30 in the evening on East Fordham Road, when officers approached a silver Kia that had been reported stolen the day before. Police said there was never a chase, and that officers told the driver and a passenger to get out of the vehicle.

Instead of complying, the driver started moving the car back and forth recklessly, according to police. In doing so, he struck a sergeant who was standing outside the vehicle, and several officers were hit by the suspect as he tried to get away in the stolen car.

Police said another officer then climbed onto the Kia, and an officer ultimately shot the driver in the arm after he drove into the sergeant. The driver was taken into custody at the scene, and investigators remained on Boston Road as they worked to piece together exactly what happened.

The driver was identified by authorities as an 18-year-old. According to police, he had been arrested in February of this year for allegedly shooting at another man in the same precinct, and he was out on bail for those felony charges at the time of Sunday's confrontation.

The Kia involved had been reported stolen a day earlier, police said. The shooting of the driver and the injuries to the officers were still under investigation, with the scene cordoned off as detectives gathered evidence and accounts from those involved.
