A late-night collision has rattled a Bronx neighborhood. Two MTA buses collided in Hunts Point, injuring five passengers in an incident that has left many neighbors and commuters especially shaken.
According to police, the crash involved two city buses on the same corridor. A BX6 bus crashed into a BX5 bus that was parked on Hunts Point Avenue, just before 10 at night, with passengers on board at the time.
The moment was caught on camera. Citizen video captured the chaotic aftermath, showing the back ends of the buses slammed directly into each other.
One rider was left unable to move. The impact forced one passenger to get stuck in her seat, and crews had to step in to free her.
Investigators have pinpointed where it happened. They say the incident occurred between 163rd Street and Hunts Point Avenue, as the BX6 bus came down the street and hit the BX5 that had passengers inside.
The injuries, while serious enough to require help, do not appear life-threatening. At least three people were taken to a local hospital, and they are expected to be okay.
By the next morning, service had returned to normal, but unease had not. Buses were back on schedule, yet for many who live in the area the crash is raising new safety concerns, with residents saying they can no longer simply assume they will always be safe on board.
The cause remains an open question. Police say they are still working to piece together what actually led up to the impact, and the MTA has been asked for answers about the collision.
