A 12-year-old boy was shot and killed by a stray bullet while riding his bicycle outside a bodega in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx on Saturday evening, in a burst of gunfire that turned an ordinary summer moment into a scene of tragedy. Police say the child was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time when the shots rang out on the corner.
The gunfire erupted at the corner of Walton Avenue and Elliott Place. Investigators found bullet casings on the ground, along with a beer can and the boy's bicycle, which remained on the sidewalk hours after the shooting. Citizen app video from an apartment overlooking the scene showed officers entering the bodega with a stretcher as a crowd watched from across the street.
The boy was not the only one hit. Two other people were also shot but are expected to survive, according to authorities. A 34-year-old man was struck in the foot, and a 25-year-old was shot in the backside, leaving three people wounded in all when the gunman opened fire in the crowded neighborhood corner.
A witness described the terrifying sequence, saying he heard five shots and then saw a boy on a bike collapse onto the sidewalk. He said the shooter then drove away from the scene in a jeep. Officers rolled out crime scene tape and processed the area as the community absorbed what had happened on their block.
Residents in the tightly packed neighborhood voiced anguish over the killing. A woman who lives in an apartment directly above the bodega said the violence has to stop, echoing a broader frustration in a corner of the Bronx where a child had been gunned down while doing something as simple and innocent as riding a bike.
New York City Mayor Mamdani weighed in with a statement, saying that the city's children should be able to ride their bikes on a nice summer day in their neighborhood without fear of being shot. The words underscored the shock of a killing that struck at a young victim during what should have been an unremarkable evening outdoors.
