A burst pipe has left some residents of a Brooklyn apartment building without a place to live, after water flooded several floors of the complex, according to News 12 New York. The building, at 241 Taft Place, was swamped when the pipe gave way, causing damage that spread across multiple floors of the property.
Tenants said the water leaked for nearly eight hours on Sunday before it was dealt with. In the days since, many of them have not been able to sleep in the building, saying it is no longer safe or possible to stay in their homes there.
The flooding forced families to find somewhere else to go. Some went to stay with loved ones, while others said they had little choice but to stick around near the damaged building, even as they struggled to cope with the conditions left behind.
Residents described the aftermath as severe and the apartments as unlivable. One tenant said they could not remain because it was toxic, adding that the smell could be detected in the air and throughout the hallways of the building after the flooding.
For some, the damage was total. Another resident said they no longer had an apartment to return to, explaining that everything would need to be reconstructed after the floors had been flooded and the units left in an uninhabitable state.
A spokesperson for the landlord said the owners are doing everything they can to help those affected. According to the station, the building's owners have said they will give the tenants a one-month rent credit as residents deal with the fallout from the flooding.
