Man, 58, found dead with knife in neck in Bed-Stuy apartment

A 58-year-old man was found dead in his Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment on Madison Street, with authorities saying he was already dead, on the bed with a knife in his neck, when they arrived, according to News 12 Brooklyn. A neighbor upstairs made a wellness-check call to 911 after a foul odor had lingered for some days. Police have not yet ruled the death a homicide and are awaiting the official cause of death from the medical examiner. Neighbors, who said the man's name was John, were shocked, describing him as friendly.

A 58-year-old man was found dead in his Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment on Madison Street, according to News 12 Brooklyn. The station reported that the man was discovered dead in the first-floor apartment on Monday afternoon, with questions now surrounding how his decomposing body went unnoticed for some time.

A reporter outside the brownstones said a foul odor that some tenants say had been around for some days was still noticeable, coming from the first-floor apartment where the man was found.

Police told the station that it was a neighbor upstairs who made the concern call to 911 for a wellness check.

Inside the apartment, the 58-year-old was found on the bed with a knife in his neck, according to News 12. Authorities said he was already dead when they arrived, but it was not clear how long his body had been there.

Police have not yet ruled the investigation a homicide, the station reported, especially as they await the official cause of death from the medical examiner's office.

His death came as a shock to people on the block, who said everyone knew each other by name, according to News 12. Neighbors described him as friendly and said he rode his bike around, adding that little usually happens on the block. Several people who spoke off camera said the man's name was John.

Some people who said they knew him personally have already started to draw their own conclusions, telling the station they believe it stemmed from a dispute he was having with his partner. That is something police have not confirmed, and the investigation continues.
