A Dallas police officer fired a weapon during an officer-involved shooting in North Dallas on Thursday morning, and no one was injured, the department said at a news conference. Dallas Police Executive Chief Terrence Rhodes said the sequence of events began at about 9:20 in the morning, when officers were called to a robbery in progress. The call sent officers to the 3500 block of Sunnyvale Street as the situation was still unfolding.
According to the chief, the suspect in the case was accused of having stolen a vehicle. After the robbery call, officers followed that vehicle as it headed north through the area. The pursuit tracked the stolen vehicle to the 5800 block of Williamstown Road, setting the stage for the confrontation that would follow once the vehicle came to a stop.
Officers then carried out a felony traffic stop on the vehicle. As the stop was being made, the suspect exited the vehicle, according to the account given by Dallas police. It was during that felony stop, as the suspect got out, that the encounter escalated into the officer-involved shooting that police described at the briefing.
Chief Rhodes said that one officer fired his weapon during the stop. Despite the shooting, the department confirmed that no one was injured in the incident. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and no officers were reported hurt, leaving the confrontation without any casualties on either side.
The chief said the investigation into the shooting remained ongoing and that more information would be released as it became available. Officials indicated there were still questions they were not able to answer at the briefing about the exact circumstances of the exchange between the officer and the suspect during the stop.
The shooting was one of two separate incidents that police in Dallas were dealing with on Thursday. It was distinct from an earlier shooting elsewhere in North Dallas in which a Dallas ISD police officer was wounded. In this case, on Williamstown Road, the officer-involved shooting ended with the suspect in custody and, according to police, no injuries reported.
