A seafood distribution warehouse in Galveston has been destroyed by an overnight fire, according to FOX 26 Houston. The blaze broke out at the Texas Gulf Seafood Distribution Center along the Galveston Wharf, and crews were still on the scene the next morning as the scale of the damage came into view.
The center is located at 7th Street and Wharf Road, on Pier 7 along the Galveston waterfront. Multiple fire departments were called to the scene just before 9 p.m., as flames took hold of the building and heavy smoke billowed over the harbor through the night.
The warehouse plays a significant part in the region's food supply. According to the station, the Texas Gulf Seafood Distribution Center supplies major grocery chains, especially H-E-B, as well as many local restaurants across the area, making it an important link for fresh seafood.
Despite the size of the fire, officials said no one was injured in the blaze. The building itself did not fare as well, with the major fire destroying the warehouse where the seafood had been distributed to stores and restaurants.
Video from overnight showed large flames and thick smoke pouring from the site along the wharf. Crews from the multiple departments that responded worked to bring the fire under control at the waterfront facility as it burned into the early hours.
The cause of the fire had not yet been determined and remained under investigation, the station reported. Firefighters were still at the scene in the morning, and the destruction of the distribution center left a major local seafood supplier out of operation.
