A male cyclist was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in Manhattan's Hamilton Heights, and police spent the morning searching for the driver who fled the scene. The crash happened the night before, and the bicyclist did not survive his injuries. Investigators are now trying to track down the vehicle they believe was involved.
According to police, the collision took place around 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of West 151st Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The location sits in the heart of Hamilton Heights, just a short distance from the local precinct.
Police say a black Dodge Durango was headed southbound on Amsterdam Avenue when it collided with the cyclist. It was not clear exactly which direction the bicyclist was traveling, but he was struck at that intersection during the crash.
The cyclist was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police described him as 32 years old. His identity had not yet been released as of this morning.
The driver did not stop after the collision and kept going, leaving the scene before officers arrived. Another vehicle that witnessed the crash did stop, and that account has helped police piece together what happened.
Investigators said they are confident the vehicle involved is a black Dodge Durango, based on the witness description and surveillance footage. NYPD mounted cameras line the street, and the 30th Precinct is just up the block, which police said leaves them well positioned to keep searching for the driver.
