Harris County commissioners have unanimously approved a 2.5 million dollar fund for the district attorney's independent investigation into the deadly ICE shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, according to FOX 26. The money was approved on Thursday, formalizing county support for a dedicated review of the case.
According to the report, the funding will cover new personnel and technology testing as investigators examine the July 7th shooting, which took place on Canal Street. The appropriation is meant to back an independent look at what happened rather than leaving the matter solely to other authorities.
Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare said that while the funds are set to cover three years, he expects the investigation will not take that long. His comments signaled an intent to move the inquiry forward rather than stretch it across the full funding window.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo noted that public pressure for closure remains an issue in the case. She described how the matter was raised during the commissioners court meeting, where community members have continued to press officials for answers about the shooting.
One speaker at the meeting delivered an emotional appeal, vowing that the push for accountability would continue. With these deaths, we will not go away until there is justice, the speaker said, adding that those gathered stand here for justice for Lorenzo.
