Houston police are investigating after a body was pulled from a bayou on the near south side of the city, in an area that draws steady foot traffic from nearby neighborhoods and students. The discovery unfolded in the 4500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard, just off the bridge and only a short distance south of downtown, close to the University of Houston campus.
The morning began with a call for help. Authorities say a report came in around 7 a.m. from a person out walking their usual route, who spotted what looked like a possible person in the bayou below. That call set off a police and recovery response at the waterway, drawing officers and crews to the scene along the bridge.
It took hours to safely bring the body out of the water. Officials say the body was recovered around 10 a.m., with detectives already on scene by the time crews completed the recovery. The stretch of bayou sits below street level, along a trail at the bottom that many walkers use but that is largely hidden from the road above.
For now, key questions remain unanswered. According to Houston police, no identity has been confirmed for the person found in the water. Investigators also stressed that no determination on a possible cause of death can be made until the body is fully examined and the medical examiner completes that portion of the investigation.
The case adds to a grim running tally for the year. Officials noted that the discovery brings the number of bodies found in Houston-area bayous so far this year to six. A detective working the scene, Chris Prasad, said he could not immediately recall previous recoveries at this specific spot, but urged anyone who saw something to come forward.
The location, close to University of Houston dorms and a popular walking trail, has left some in the community uneasy. One resident said this was the second body she had seen in the bayou, adding that she had been out walking the night before. Police are asking anyone who was in the area and saw anything to contact the homicide division at 713-308-3600, saying any information could help.
