A Houston man is behind bars and facing a murder charge after telling investigators that he shot and killed his girlfriend during a violent fight, according to police. The admission left a woman dead and put a man in custody, in a case that authorities say began as a massive argument between the couple before it escalated into a fatal shooting.
According to investigators, the shooting happened at around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. It took place at a home on Maritime Drive, on the northeast side of the Houston area, where what police described as a violent confrontation between the two ended with gunfire and the death of one of them at the residence.
Police identified the man taken into custody as 29-year-old Cody Prince, and said the person he shot was 41-year-old Tanya Swink, his girlfriend. Investigators said it was Prince who shot Swink, underscoring that the deadly violence had erupted between two people who were in a relationship with one another.
The home where the shooting unfolded sits near Sheldon and Garrett Road, just down the street from Sheldon Lake, on the northeastern edge of the Houston area. Police pointed to that residence as the scene of the confrontation that ended with the 41-year-old woman fatally shot inside the home.
Investigators said the killing came during what they characterized as a massive fight between Prince and Swink. According to police, the man admitted to shooting and killing his girlfriend during that fight, an account that became the basis for the charge that authorities have since brought against him in the case.
Prince was arrested at the scene of the shooting, police said, taken into custody at the same home where the killing had occurred rather than after any search for a suspect. He is now facing a murder charge in connection with the death of Tanya Swink, according to investigators.
