One person was killed in a fiery late-night crash on the Sam Houston Tollway in Houston, an accident that shut down a major stretch of the beltway and left investigators working through the early morning hours to figure out what happened. The wreck struck just before midnight and forced the closure of all northbound lanes at one of the tollway's busiest points.
According to officials, a car traveling on the northbound side of the tollway slammed into the Central Plaza toll plaza. The impact was severe enough that the vehicle then caught fire, turning the toll area into an active emergency scene as crews responded to both the crash and the flames that followed in its wake.
Tragically, the person inside the car did not survive. Authorities say one occupant of the vehicle was killed in the combination of the wreckage and the fire, a grim outcome from a single-vehicle collision at a spot where drivers normally slow only briefly to pass through the toll plaza before continuing on their way.
The crash happened along the section of the tollway near the Jersey Village area on the northwest side of Houston. With the toll plaza itself involved in the collision, officials moved to close the entire northbound side of the roadway, redirecting traffic away from the scene while the investigation and cleanup got under way.
By Wednesday morning, all of the northbound lanes of the Sam Houston Tollway remained shut down at Central Plaza. The closure came right as the early commute was getting started, and drivers heading toward Jersey Village and the surrounding area were urged to be aware of the shutdown and to plan for delays or alternate routes.
For now, the central question is what caused the vehicle to crash into the toll plaza in the first place. Officials said they were still investigating exactly how the wreck unfolded, with the scene preserved as they pieced together the sequence of events that ended with one life lost and a key Houston tollway partly closed.
