A theft that was captured on camera in a West Houston cemetery has led to an arrest. According to Fox 26, a woman who was seen stealing from a mausoleum has now been taken into custody in Conroe, Texas, bringing a publicised case a step closer to resolution.
Local law enforcement made the announcement with footage of the moment. Harris County Precinct 5 constables shared video of the arrest, putting a face to a case that had circulated widely after surveillance images from the mausoleum were released.
Investigators have now named the person they say is responsible. The woman was identified as Amber Renee Fennell, 37, who was taken into custody at her home on Wednesday night, ending the search for the suspect seen in the earlier footage.
One detail of the case has drawn particular attention. Officials say her toddler, who had appeared in the surveillance video at the mausoleum during the theft, was also in the home at the time of the arrest, placing a young child at the centre of the story.
Authorities moved to ensure the child's wellbeing. According to the report, the toddler was turned over to a family member after the arrest, so that the young child would be cared for while the legal process against Fennell moves forward.
The charges she faces are serious. Fennell is now facing two felony charges of burglary and theft, a reflection of how authorities view a crime that targeted a mausoleum, a place many regard as sacred and meant to be undisturbed.
