A shooting inside Deerbrook Mall in Humble sent shoppers scrambling for the exits on Saturday evening and drew a large police response to the busy retail center in North Harris County. Authorities said the gunfire left two people injured and one person detained, as officers moved quickly to lock down the mall and account for everyone involved in the chaotic scene.
Police said the person taken into custody and one of the wounded are both juveniles under the age of 17, which limited how much investigators could immediately release about them. According to the police chief at the scene, one of those who was shot was about to be taken into surgery, an indication of how serious at least one of the injuries appeared to be in the immediate aftermath.
The second person struck by gunfire was described as a bystander who was hit in the finger and was not believed to have been a target. Officers said they were still working to establish exactly what led to the shooting, but early on they characterized it as an isolated incident rather than a random attack on the public inside the shopping center.
Investigators said at least four shots were fired, though they cautioned that the exact number had not yet been confirmed. One family, out buying shoes for the first day of school, had to flee so quickly that a young girl left with a single shoe still tagged and her feet in the thin try-on socks handed out at the store.
Three on-duty officers were already stationed inside the mall when the shooting erupted, and police credited that presence with helping to contain the situation very quickly. The response grew into a multi-jurisdictional effort, drawing in Harris County and Humble officers along with Montgomery County units and the Department of Public Safety as detectives fanned out to speak with witnesses and victims.
By late Saturday, officials said the mall had been secured and closed, and that they believed all parties involved were accounted for, with one person in custody. Police stressed there was no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation continued at the scene, with detectives processing evidence and piecing together the sequence of events that turned a routine shopping night into a frightening ordeal.
