A teenage girl has died after drowning at Lake Sammamish on the east side of the Seattle area. The tragedy unfolded on Sunday evening, turning what is normally a popular summer spot into the scene of an emergency response that ultimately could not save her life.
The incident happened at Lake Sammamish State Park, along the shores of the lake. It was there, during the evening hours, that emergency crews were called to a report involving a young person who had gone underwater, prompting a rush to the water's edge.
According to Bellevue Fire, crews from Fall City responded to reports of a young girl underwater at the state park. Responders moved quickly to the location, working against the clock in a situation where every minute mattered for any chance of survival.
Rescuers were able to locate the teenager in the lake and pull her out of the water. Getting her out, however, was only the first step, as it was immediately clear that she was in a critical condition and in need of urgent medical intervention.
Once she had been brought out of the lake, paramedics began CPR and other life-saving measures. According to Bellevue Fire, those efforts continued for more than an hour, with crews doing everything they could to try to revive her at the scene.
Despite the prolonged resuscitation attempts, the teenager could not be saved and died at the scene. The death adds to long-standing concerns about water safety at lakes and state parks, where outings can turn tragic in a matter of moments.
