A water main break flooded the intersection of East 14th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan's East Village, according to Eyewitness News ABC7NY. Video from about an hour earlier showed water flowing through the intersection and into some nearby basements.
It took about an hour and 10 minutes before Con Edison got the water shut down to the area, at around 5:42 p.m., the station reported.
The break left damage to the roadway, according to News Copter 7. The affected spot was almost in the middle of First Avenue and across the westbound lanes of East 14th Street.
By the time crews had the water under control, it was no longer flowing into the basements, the station reported.
There is a subway station right at the location, the First Avenue station for the L train, which somehow remained open for the entire time during the water main break, according to Eyewitness News ABC7NY.
Water remained throughout East 14th Street and First Avenue, the station reported. Pedestrians and bicycles were getting through, but traffic was completely shut down in the area.
According to the station, the First Avenue closure was in place a block away at East 13th Street, while East 14th Street was closed eastbound at Second Avenue and westbound at Avenue A as crews continued to make the repair.
