A second suspect has been arraigned in a deadly home invasion that rocked a beachside Connecticut community in June. Ivan Barias-Florimon, a 24-year-old man from the Bronx, appeared before a judge in what Milford police describe as a targeted attack on an older couple, becoming the second person to face charges in a case that has shaken the shoreline city.
According to police, Barias-Florimon was arrested in New York City earlier this week and then extradited to Connecticut, where he was officially charged before being brought into court. During the arraignment he kept his head down throughout the proceeding and did not look up once as the case against him was laid out.
The Bronx man faces eight felony charges in connection with the attack. Milford police have characterized the break-in as both targeted and deadly, saying it was aimed at an older couple who were at home when the intruders arrived, and the seriousness of the allegations was reflected in the number of counts filed against him.
The home invasion took place on June 3 at the couple's beachside home on East Broadway, just before three o'clock in the morning. Police say Barias-Florimon was one of two intruders who entered the house while the victims were asleep inside, turning what should have been a quiet night at home into a fatal assault.
Investigators say the intruders shot Frederick Werner multiple times, and the 69-year-old man was killed in the attack. His significant other, 69-year-old Sandra Cooper, was shot once in the head and was left seriously injured, leaving one member of the couple dead and the other fighting to recover.
Barias-Florimon is the second person to be arrested and charged in the investigation into the June attack. While the arrest warrant in the case remains sealed to the public for now, the court has had the opportunity to review the underlying material as the prosecution moves forward against the accused.
