Nine adults were injured in a mass shooting outside a nightclub in the Uptown area of Minneapolis, according to police, who said two of the victims were men with potentially life-threatening injuries who were nonetheless expected to survive. The attack unfolded overnight in one of the city's busiest nightlife districts, leaving a trail of casualties and prompting officials to step to a podium to give an update on what they described as a shocking outbreak of gun violence.
Preliminary information indicates that a large crowd had gathered outside the Rain Event Center, on Hennepin Avenue South, awaiting entry when gunfire erupted. The presence of so many people outside the venue at that hour helps to explain the scale of the casualties, as the shooting tore through a crowd that had been waiting to get inside for a night out.
The response from police was rapid. The first officers arrived on the scene in less than a minute, encountering a chaotic situation with multiple victims and a large crowd. A call for help brought additional officers from every precinct, along with other law enforcement agencies, who worked to secure the scene, provide aid and protect the public and the surrounding neighbourhood.
Officials made clear how seriously they viewed the attack. They condemned it as a brazen act of violence in a crowded entertainment district where innocent people were placed at tremendous risk, calling the shooting unacceptable. Firing a gun into a crowd of people, they said, demonstrated a complete disregard for human life, and they described the incident as an unthinkable, disgusting and cowardly act.
The investigation has been taken on by the department's firearm assault shooting team, known as FAST, which includes members of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Among the lines of inquiry, police said, was whether the attack had been a drive-by shooting.

They said they were committed to identifying every single person involved in the shooting and pledged to use every investigative resource available to do so, framing the case as a priority given the number of people hurt and the setting in which the violence took place.

With nine people injured, two of them critically, the shooting has left the Uptown neighbourhood shaken.
