A round of severe thunderstorms that swept through the tri-state area has turned deadly, leaving behind a trail of damage across the region. Authorities say the storm led to the death of an 85-year-old man in Queens. It marked the most serious consequence of a system that moved through quickly but with considerable force.
The man was struck and killed by a tree in Forest Park, in Queens. Officials were still gathering details about what happened, and more information was expected to follow. The loss underscored how dangerous the sudden, powerful winds proved to be for those caught outside.
The same storm uprooted trees across a wide area. Heavy rain and high winds brought trees down in multiple neighborhoods stretching from New Jersey to Queens, with branches and trunks landing on roads and front yards alike.
In the Bronx, the damage was especially striking. A massive tree crashed down on top of a Jeep, one of the more dramatic examples of how the storm tore through the area and left vehicles and property in its path.
The disruption reached the region's transit network as well. Fallen branches caused minor delays for both NJ Transit and the Long Island Railroad, complicating travel as crews worked to clear what the storm had left behind.
By the time the worst had passed, the storm had moved out of the area. Even so, forecasters cautioned that more weather could still follow, leaving residents to clean up while keeping an eye on the sky.
