A third death is now being linked to the controversial ICE detention center in Newark known as Delaney Hall, according to Eyewitness News ABC7NY. The latest death is intensifying calls by critics who want the facility shut down.
According to the station, the third death happened a couple of weeks ago. A detainee started having what ICE describes as an apparent seizure during the intake process at the facility.
That person was then released from custody and sent to the hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. The sequence has drawn scrutiny over how and when the detainee received care.
ICE said it did not notify Congress about the death because, in its account, the person did not actually die while in its custody. That explanation has done little to quiet concerns about what happened at the site.
The death is adding to broader worries about conditions at Delaney Hall, which critics say is basically at capacity. Intake is supposed to take 12 hours, but it has been taking longer than that, according to those raising alarms about the facility.
Concerns also center on the administering of health care. Critics say there are women being held in the facility and people with serious health issues who are not being properly treated inside.
Eyewitness News cameras were rolling this afternoon at Delaney Hall as emergency medical crews responded to two separate calls. There was no word on what the medical conditions were or whether they involved detainees at the facility.
