Mother charged after child left in hot car outside Houston-area Costco

A 4-year-old child was rescued from a hot vehicle outside a Costco in northwest Harris County after being left alone for about 30 minutes. The child's mother, 33-year-old Vanny Wynn, was arrested and charged with child abandonment.

A young child is safe after being rescued from a hot vehicle outside a Costco in the Houston area, in a case that has led to criminal charges against the child's mother. The incident unfolded on a sweltering day and ended only because bystanders stepped in before first responders could arrive.

According to deputies, the 4-year-old child had been left alone in the car for about 30 minutes. The location was a Costco in northwest Harris County, where the vehicle sat in a parking lot during the kind of intense heat that can quickly turn the inside of a car into a dangerous, even deadly, environment.

It was concerned citizens, not officials, who first acted. Bystanders removed the child from the car before EMS arrived, intervening when they realized a young child had been left unattended in the vehicle in the heat of the day.

The response was handled by Constable Mark Herman's office, which detailed what investigators found at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the child was safe after being taken out of the car, a relief in a situation that could have ended in tragedy.

The fallout fell on the child's mother. Authorities identified her as 33-year-old Vanny Wynn, who was later arrested and charged with child abandonment in connection with leaving the young child alone in the vehicle.

The case is a stark reminder of the risks of leaving children in parked cars, especially in the Houston area's extreme summer heat. With afternoon temperatures climbing into the 90s and feels-like readings well above 100 degrees, even a short time inside a closed vehicle can pose a serious danger to a small child.
