A 10-year-old boy has died and a 10-year-old girl remained missing after three children were swept into the water near Dundee Island Park along the Passaic River, according to Eyewitness News ABC7NY. An 11-year-old girl made it out of the water alive and is home, but her 10-year-old brother's body was recovered, and divers continued searching for the third child late into the night. An account relayed on air suggested the boy may have helped save his sister as he was going under.

A 10-year-old boy has died and a 10-year-old girl remained missing after three children were swept into the water near Dundee Island Park, along the Passaic River, according to Eyewitness News ABC7NY.

An 11-year-old girl made it out of the water alive earlier in the evening and is now home.

Her 10-year-old brother's body was recovered.

A third child, a 10-year-old girl, remained missing, with divers still in the water below an overpass over the Passaic River searching for her late into the night.

According to the account relayed on air, as the boy was going under he pushed the surviving girl, who ended up by the rocks and climbed out, a detail suggesting he may have helped save her life.

First responders set up a command post at a nearby park. An officer at the scene initially reported that three children were missing, and about 20 to 30 minutes later word came that one had been found alive.

Reporter Anthony Carlo, live at the scene, said the story had everyone's heart in their mouth as crews hoped for a good outcome, and he relayed appeals to pray for the families, who were described as distraught.
