A Port Washington man is under arrest, accused of driving drunk and slamming into a liquor store, according to News 12 New York. The crash left a well-known storefront badly damaged and prompted a police investigation that ended with charges against the driver.
Police identified the man as 66-year-old Matthew Mayran, who is now facing driving while intoxicated charges after crashing into Black Tie Wine and Spirits. The incident unfolded overnight in the Nassau County community.
According to police, Mayran was driving drunk on Shore Road just after midnight when his vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the building. The impact caused extensive damage to the store.
Officers at the scene conducted field sobriety tests, including a preliminary breath test. Court documents show that another test was done a few hours later, which put his blood alcohol content at 0.11 percent, according to the station.
There was some good fortune in the timing of the crash. No one was inside the building when the vehicle struck it, and no one was hurt in the collision, even as the storefront took heavy damage.
By the day after, the store's windows were boarded up and some debris was still scattered on the grass, and staff said the business would be closed that day and the next. The local building inspector also responded to the scene to evaluate the structural integrity of the building.
