A Houston man accused of killing his partner and then turning the gun on himself has now been formally charged with murder. The case, which has shaken a Southwest Houston neighborhood, centers on a shooting that police say unfolded inside a family apartment last week and left one person dead.
According to police, Ronnie Amaya allegedly shot and killed his partner, Angelica Loreto, in the Southwest Houston apartment the couple shared. The killing took place last week, and investigators have since built the case that led to the murder charge announced against him.
Among the most harrowing details is the role of the couple's children. Police say the three young children who were in the home ran to another apartment to get help in the immediate aftermath, turning to neighbors as the violence erupted around them.
Amaya did not flee the scene. After the shooting, he turned the weapon on himself, suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He survived the attempt and, according to authorities, remained in stable condition at a hospital, where he was recovering as the murder charge was filed.
With the formal charge now in place, the case moves into the legal process. Amaya faces a murder count in connection with Loreto's death, and the proceedings against him will continue once his medical condition allows, as prosecutors pursue accountability for the fatal shooting.
The killing is the latest reminder of the toll of domestic violence, which often plays out behind closed doors and, as in this case, in front of children. Authorities again pointed those in danger to support resources, noting that a domestic violence hotline is available around the clock for anyone who needs help.
