Pierce County Sheriff's deputies arrested two people after a high speed chase through Spanaway, Washington. Deputies say the pursuit reached dangerous speeds before it ended in a crash. Both the driver and a passenger were taken into custody.
According to deputies, at one point the driver was going more than 100 miles per hour, double the speed limit. The high speed made the pursuit especially dangerous. Deputies moved to stop the vehicle.
Deputies first initiated a traffic stop. Detective Joshua Mills said deputies used stop sticks, which caused the car to slow down. That set the stage for deputies to try to bring the vehicle to a halt.
Deputies then used a PIT maneuver on the car. Video shows the vehicle crashing into a light pole. The pole then fell onto a nearby fence and a parked car, though no one was inside the parked car at the time.
After the crash, deputies say the driver tried to run but quickly surrendered. Both occupants were detained at the scene. The remnants of the crash were still visible in Spanaway on Saturday afternoon.
Deputies later found a gun inside the car. They arrested the 18-year-old driver on suspicion of looting and unlawful possession of a firearm. The 22-year-old passenger was also arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm.
Officials said the case remains an active investigation. Detective Mills warned that running from police at high speeds, particularly at night with no lights on, is extremely dangerous and puts everyone at risk. Authorities urged drivers not to flee from law enforcement.
