An early-morning crash has left an elderly Connecticut woman fighting for her life. A 78-year-old Stamford resident is in critical condition after she was struck by a car in the city early Friday morning, though police are not yet releasing her name.
The collision happened at a single Stamford intersection. Police say the accident occurred around 5:30 Friday morning at the corner of Stillwater Avenue and Progress Drive.
It unfolded as a driver was making a turn. According to police, a car coming from Stillwater Avenue tried to take a left turn onto Progress Drive.
The driver did not leave the scene. Police say the driver, a 28-year-old Stamford resident, stayed and tried to help the woman before calling 911.
Investigators shared some early details about the driver and the circumstances. Stamford Police Sergeant Jeffrey Booth says the driver was working at the time of the accident, and that there is no evidence at this time of intoxication or speeding.
Lighting at the location is not believed to have been a problem. Booth said the area is fairly well lit, with a park right across the street, street lighting and a business at the corner, though it was dark at the time.
The case is not yet closed. Police say this remains an open investigation and are asking anyone with information to contact the Stamford Police Department.
