Sydney home invasion: man's hand severed by machete-wielding raiders

A 23-year-old man has been left with life-changing injuries after four masked men forced their way into a Sydney home before dawn and severed his hand with a machete. Police allege the intruders forced the family to open a safe, stole a large amount of cash and fled in a dark SUV. The victim was rushed to Liverpool Hospital.

A violent home invasion in Sydney has left a 23-year-old man with life-changing injuries, after a group of masked intruders broke into the property before dawn and attacked him with a bladed weapon. Police allege the raid was carried out by four men who targeted the home in search of cash, in what officers have described as a brutal and frightening ordeal for the family inside.

According to police, the group forced their way into the home just before two o'clock in the morning. The intruders knocked down the door, an act that immediately set off the home alarm system. That alarm proved crucial, waking the family who were asleep inside and alerting them to the fact that strangers had broken into the house.

Several members of the family were home at the time. Police say the parents, both in their forties, were inside along with the 23-year-old man and two teenagers. When the alarm sounded, the 23-year-old came out to confront what was happening, walking into a situation that would quickly turn violent.

It was at that point, police allege, that the young man was attacked. One of the intruders was armed with bladed weapons, including a machete, and is accused of striking the 23-year-old in a blow that severed his left hand. The severity of the injury underlines just how dangerous the confrontation became in a matter of moments.

The attackers then turned their attention to the rest of the household. Police allege the father was confronted and forced to a safe, with the intruders demanding cash. The group took a large amount of money from that safe before fleeing the scene in a dark coloured SUV, leaving behind a family in shock and a young man gravely wounded.

Emergency services were called to the home shortly afterwards. Paramedics treated the 23-year-old man for his very serious injuries at the scene before he was rushed to Liverpool Hospital. Authorities have described the wounds as life-altering, a reflection of the lasting impact such an attack can have well beyond the immediate aftermath.

New South Wales Police said there was no indication that the home invasion was linked to organised crime. Instead, investigators believe the attackers were somehow aware that there may have been cash on the premises, and that this was what they had set out to steal. Officers said their thoughts were with the young man as the search for those responsible continues.
