Toronto's CN Tower is marking a major milestone, the 50th anniversary of the day it officially opened to the public, CBC News Toronto reported. The iconic structure welcomed its first visitors on this day back in 1976, after construction that had begun a few years earlier, and it has remained one of the city's defining symbols ever since.
When it opened, the CN Tower claimed a remarkable distinction. It was the tallest freestanding building in the world at the time, a status that helped cement Toronto's place on the global map and turned the tower into an instantly recognizable feature of the skyline.
The tower no longer holds that record, which has since passed to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Even so, its standing as a landmark has endured, and it continues to be treated as a symbol of both Toronto and Canada more broadly rather than simply a tall building.
Its enduring appeal is reflected in the crowds it draws. According to the report, the CN Tower still attracts some 2 million visitors a year from all over the planet, making it one of the city's biggest attractions five decades after it first opened its doors.
To celebrate the anniversary, the tower laid on a full day of festivities. Plans included live music on the plaza, live art, games and face painting, along with 553 cupcakes, one for each meter of the tower's height, set to be handed out to 553 lucky people who came to join the party.
Jennifer Page, who works for the CN Tower, described the structure as a kind of big canvas for the city. She said its nightly lighting connects Torontonians, with the tower lit for charitable causes and Canadian celebrations, and called it an important wayfinding tool and compass point for locals and visitors alike.
She added that the tower's silhouette is unique and distinctive, something that feels uniquely Toronto and uniquely Canada. Half a century after its opening, the anniversary underscored the role the CN Tower continues to play as a gathering point and a source of identity for the city and the country.
