Backed by more than four million dollars in federal funding, the firm aims to get the technology into the field by 2030 as Ottawa studies nuclear options for the North.

A Canadian company is working to build micro nuclear reactors small enough to be deployed into the Arctic, with the goal of replacing the diesel generators that currently power remote northern communities. Daniel Sax, the chief executive of the Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation, says he wants to get the technology into the field by 2030, describing the reactors as very small units that could be sent north to supply clean, reliable power.

The project is being supported by more than four million dollars in funding to advance Canadian-made energy solutions aimed at securing the North. The investment reflects a growing interest in finding alternatives to diesel, which has long been the mainstay for generating electricity in isolated Arctic communities that sit far from any power grid.

In an email to Radio-Canada, the federal Department of National Defence said micro reactors have the potential to improve energy security and reliability in the Arctic. The comment signalled that the technology is being viewed not only as a civilian energy option but also through the lens of northern defence and the challenge of powering remote installations.

The key distinction lies in the scale of the reactors. Traditional nuclear reactors used in Canada can generate about 800 megawatts of electricity, while the International Atomic Energy Agency considers a reactor to be small if it generates less than 300 megawatts. What Sax is working on is smaller still, with one expert suggesting a micro reactor could generate between one and 50 megawatts.

Supporters argue the technology could help close a persistent energy gap in the North. Ryan Clark, a director with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, said nuclear energy could solve an energy deficit in the region, noting that while some communities have a constant need to bring in diesel, a micro reactor could remove that dependence and, in his view, benefit the environment.

Questions remain, however, about deploying such reactors in extreme climate conditions. One concern is that the heat generated by nuclear reactors could contribute to permafrost melt, a risk that would need to be addressed before the units are placed in the fragile northern landscape. It is still unclear exactly where in the North the technology would first be installed.
