Researchers caution that such retrospective analysis may reflect an imbalance of certain risks that were never directly measured, leaving important questions about the drugs unanswered.
To move beyond that uncertainty, a Canadian cancer researcher plans to study GLP-1 drugs in a large clinical trial focused specifically on cancer survivors. The aim is to test the medication's effects in a controlled setting, rather than relying on data that was gathered for other purposes.
Using advanced blood tests and lengthy follow-up periods, the researcher wants to determine whether the drugs can actually help stop cancer from coming back over time. Tracking patients over an extended period is intended to show whether any benefit holds up in the long run.
The potential implications reach beyond those who have already been diagnosed. If GLP-1 drugs prove effective for high-risk patients, researchers suggest they might eventually help prevent cancer in the general population as well.
Even so, definitive answers are not expected soon. Establishing whether the medications truly work against cancer could take years, if not decades, of careful study. It is acceptable not to have all the answers yet, the researcher said, underlining how much still remains uncertain.
In the meantime, a surgical oncologist urged Canadians to concentrate on measures that are already well established. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically fit and avoiding alcohol and smoking remain among the most reliable ways to reduce the risk of cancer.
Before turning to any medication, the oncologist said, people should first work through those proven steps. Taking part in cancer screening programs, where eligible, can also help catch early signs of the disease before it becomes harder to treat.
