Striking workers protest Ford Fest as photo sparks dispute

OPSEU members on strike for more than a month protested at Premier Doug Ford's Ford Fest in Ontario. A disputed aerial photo posted by two Progressive Conservative members downplayed the protest, drawing criticism from NDP leader Marit Stiles.

A gathering meant to showcase Premier Doug Ford turned into a flashpoint after striking workers crashed Ford Fest in Ontario and a photo of the event ignited a political dispute. The episode pulled a long-running labour fight into the spotlight and prompted accusations that governing politicians had tried to play down the protest.

A few minutes before the premier took the stage, protesters were already making themselves heard and seen. Many wore purple t-shirts and were members of OPSEU, union members who have been on strike for more than a month, bringing their grievances directly to the high-profile Progressive Conservative event.

The demonstration continued as Ford spoke. According to the report, protesters turned their backs to him and chanted that the cause was worth fighting for, raising their voices in an effort to drown out his speech and ensure their presence could not be ignored at the premier's own event.

The controversy centered on an aerial photo that two PC members of provincial parliament posted to their social media. The image showed not much purple but a lot of blue, the colour of the PC party, an angle that appeared to minimize how many protesters had actually turned out. A CBC reporter noted being in the photo, near the bottom in a jean jacket.

Attorney General Doug Downey was among those who shared the image, calling it an unforgettable evening in a post that included the photo in question. Asked about it later, he said he supervises and signs off on all posts, but added that he had simply looked at his phone and did not know much about it before it went up.

The opposition seized on the episode. NDP leader Marit Stiles said it reminded her of the kind of Trump talking points about crowd sizes, framing the photo as an attempt to distort the reality of the protest. Asked what she thinks should happen next, she said the posts should be deleted.

Behind the clash over a single image lies a labour dispute that has now stretched beyond a month, with OPSEU members determined to keep their strike visible. By bringing their protest to Ford Fest, the workers ensured that a celebratory political event became, instead, another stage for their fight and a fresh test of how the government responds.
