The decisive game did not start the way Toronto would have wanted. The Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins opened the scoring early in the first period. They struck just six seconds into a power play, as Avery Hayes did quick work and fed McDonough, who shot and scored. The early goal put the visitors ahead and forced the Marlies to chase the game.
That one-goal lead held for a stretch of the contest. The Penguins kept their advantage until midway through the game, when Toronto finally found a response. Easton Cowan jumped on a rebound and buried it for his seventh goal of the postseason. The strike tied the game at one and shifted the momentum back toward the Marlies.
From there, the goaltending and defence took over on both sides. Neither team managed to score in the third period, leaving the game level after regulation. The deadlock meant the series would be decided in overtime, raising the tension for both benches and the crowd.
The extra period did not last to a second overtime. Late in the first overtime, Alex Nylander found the back of the net for Toronto. The goal gave the Marlies a 2-1 win and, with it, the series. It was the kind of sudden finish that sends one team forward and the other home.
Now the Marlies turn their attention to the championship round. They will face either the Chicago Wolves or the Colorado Eagles in the finals, depending on how that matchup resolves. Reaching the final for the first time in several seasons gives Toronto a chance to compete for the title it has been chasing throughout the playoffs.
