Toronto Raptors sign head coach Darko Rajakovic to multi-year extension

The Toronto Raptors have signed head coach Darko Rajakovic to a multi-year contract extension, announced Thursday, after he led the team to a 46-36 record and a 16-win improvement last season. Rajakovic guided Toronto to the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and finished 10th in NBA Coach of the Year voting. Terms were not disclosed.

The Toronto Raptors have moved to secure the man on their bench, agreeing to a multi-year contract extension with head coach Darko Rajakovic. The deal keeps in place the coach who steered the franchise to one of its biggest year-over-year improvements.

The team announced the extension on Thursday. The Raptors did not disclose the terms of the new deal, but the move signals the organization's confidence in the direction Rajakovic has set for the club.

The extension follows a strong season in Toronto. Rajakovic led the Raptors to a 46-36 record, an improvement of 16 wins over the previous season, a leap that marked a clear turnaround for the team.

That record was good enough to lift Toronto up the standings. The Raptors finished as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, putting the club back in the mix among the conference's contenders.

Rajakovic's work drew recognition around the league. He finished 10th in NBA Coach of the Year voting, and he became the first European head coach to guide an NBA team through a full season and into the playoffs, a milestone in his rise.

The 47-year-old took over as Toronto's head coach in 2023. He arrived with a lengthy resume as an assistant, having made coaching stops with Oklahoma City, Phoenix and Memphis before getting his chance to lead a team of his own.

With his future now settled, Rajakovic said the team's focus remains on continued growth. The Raptors, he indicated, are keeping their sights set on further improvement and, ultimately, on chasing an NBA championship.

For a franchise that has been rebuilding its identity, the extension offers a measure of stability at the top. By committing to Rajakovic for the long term, the Raptors have signaled that they believe the recent progress is the start of something, rather than a one-year jump.
