A fatal motorcycle crash shut down a major highway north of Vancouver for hours overnight, leaving hundreds of travellers stranded along British Columbia's Sea to Sky Highway.
The crash happened on the Sea to Sky Highway, the scenic and heavily used route that runs north of Vancouver. Authorities said one person was killed in the collision, which brought traffic along the corridor to a standstill.
According to police, officers had spotted two motorcycles speeding along the highway shortly before the crash. Moments later, one of the motorcycles collided with an RV, in a sequence that was partly captured on dash camera footage from a nearby vehicle.
Drivers who were close to the scene described the frightening moment, with one heard reacting in shock at how narrowly the chaos unfolded just ahead of them. The footage underscored how quickly the situation on the highway turned deadly.
In the aftermath, the highway was shut down for more than eight hours as crews worked at the scene. With no way through, hundreds of motorists were left stranded for much of the night along the closed route.
Some of those caught in the closure ended up sleeping in their cars, while others simply waited it out on the side of the road until the highway could reopen. The lengthy shutdown turned an ordinary evening drive into an overnight ordeal for many travellers.
Police were looking into the circumstances that led to the crash, including the speeds involved, as they worked to piece together exactly what happened on the Sea to Sky Highway before one of the motorcycles struck the RV.
