A man in his 20s was shot and killed in what police and witnesses described as a brazen daylight shooting in Brampton, Ontario, on Monday afternoon, turning a busy residential subdivision into a murder scene.
Peel Regional Police say they responded to a call for shots fired at about 3:40 p.m. at Earls Bridge Boulevard and Eden Brook Hill Drive, in a part of the city full of families out walking on a summer afternoon.
Officers arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police said the victim was a man in his 20s but did not release further identifying details.
Investigators say they are searching for two suspects, described as men wearing dark clothing, who they believe fled on foot from the scene. Both remained outstanding, and police warned that they had not yet been located.
Witnesses told reporters there appeared to be an altercation between the two suspects and the eventual victim before the shots were fired, though the nature of that confrontation was not clear. One neighbour described seeing two people confronting a single individual, saying it first looked as though they were firing at a house before it became clear the target was the man.
Some witnesses said the victim was seen running for cover into a house that may not have been his own before he was ultimately pulled out. Several neighbours said they were fearful of speaking on camera because the two suspects were still at large, as Peel police continued to work the scene and appeal for information.
