A Durham Region police recruit has been killed in a crash near the Ontario Police College, and a second recruit was left in critical condition, according to police.
The Ontario Provincial Police say they are investigating the crash, which happened near the college in Aylmer, Ontario, where new officers train.
According to the OPP, the crash took place just before 11:30 in the morning, when the vehicle carrying the recruits collided with a transport truck.
One of the recruits died. The other, a constable in training who is also from Durham, was rushed to hospital in critical condition, police said.
In a statement posted on social media, Durham Police Chief Peter Morera addressed the death, as the force absorbed the loss of one of its own before the recruit could begin the job.
The circumstances of the collision remained under investigation, with the OPP working to determine exactly how the crash unfolded on the road near the training college.
