Police in Ontario say a crackdown on stunt driving and speeding has led to thousands of charges, as authorities warn about the toll of excessive speed on the province's roads.
The effort, known as Project Erase, is a police crackdown targeting stunt driving and speeding, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.
The OPP said that last year alone, excessive speed was a contributing factor in 75 deaths and 65 fatal collisions that it investigated, a figure police pointed to in underscoring the danger.
Speed was also linked to nearly 10,000 collisions in which more than 600 people suffered life altering or serious injuries, according to the force.
Police said that between the OPP and police services across the Greater Toronto Area, more than 2,400 charges were laid between May and June as part of the crackdown.
Officers stressed that behind the numbers is a human toll, describing how a single crash can leave a person, a family and a community forever changed, as they urged drivers to slow down.
