Renata Ford, the wife of late Toronto mayor Rob Ford, has died at the age of 55, according to CBC News Toronto.
She shared two children with her late husband, the former mayor whose time in office and public life drew national attention before his death.
Beyond her family life, Renata Ford stepped into the political arena herself, running unsuccessfully as a candidate in the 2019 federal election.
In the years that followed, she was also at the center of a public family dispute. Renata Ford accused her brother-in-law, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, of mishandling her late husband's estate and causing her family financial harm.
The Premier denied those accusations. On Tuesday, following news of her death, Doug Ford said in a statement that the loss was incredibly painful and that his whole family was hurting for them.
Doug Ford asked that people respect the family's privacy during what he described as a difficult time, as those close to Renata Ford mourned her passing.
