One killed, one hurt in Scarborough shooting near Highway 401

One person was killed and another wounded in two related shootings in the Scarborough area of Toronto on Monday afternoon. Toronto police say they were called around 3:16 p.m. to Victoria Park Avenue and Terraview Boulevard, just south of Highway 401, where a man was found shot and pronounced dead. Minutes later, a second shooting was reported on Esquire Road, where a person was found shot in or around a black SUV and taken to hospital.

One person was killed and another was wounded in a shooting in the Scarborough area of Toronto on Monday afternoon, an outburst of gun violence in the city's east end that police were still investigating into the evening.

Toronto police said they received a call at around 3:16 in the afternoon for what was described as unknown trouble at Victoria Park Avenue and Terraview Boulevard, just south of Highway 401. There were reports of a man who had been shot in the area.

When officers responded, they found one person who was pronounced dead at the scene along Terraview Boulevard. Hours later, the victim's body still remained at the location as investigators worked through the scene.

About four minutes later, police received a second call for another shooting a short distance away, on Esquire Road in the Victoria Park area. A citizen had phoned after finding a person who had been shot in or around a black SUV, and that victim was taken to hospital. Police said the two shootings appeared to be related.

Police did not immediately say what had led to the shooting or provide a description of any suspects, indicating they were waiting to release more information as their investigation continued.

Officials said they expected to share further details later in the evening. The daytime shooting was the latest to unsettle a Toronto-area community, coming amid a string of recent gun-violence incidents in the region.

Authorities have since filled in key details of the case. Police identified the man who was killed as 32-year-old Levon Byers, who was found suffering from gunshot wounds after officers were called to the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Terraview Boulevard just after 3:15 in the afternoon, and who later died at the scene. A 28-year-old man now faces an additional charge of murder in connection with the shooting.

Police identified that man as 28-year-old Hakim El Mouzazi, who they said had himself been found suffering from gunshot wounds after getting out of a vehicle and was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Investigators said a gun was also found inside the car. El Mouzazi was arrested and charged with four firearm-related offenses before the second-degree murder count was added in connection with Byers' death.
