A 27 year old man has been charged with attempted murder after a Toronto police officer was shot while responding to a robbery in the city's downtown. Police identified the accused as Stefano Edwards, of Peterborough, who was arrested at the scene. In total, he faces 14 charges, including attempted murder, assault with intent to resist arrest and robbery with an offensive weapon, as the case now moves into the courts for prosecution.
The shooting happened just before 3:30 a.m. at Bloor Street East and Sherbourne Street, where officers had been called for an e bike robbery in progress. During the confrontation, an officer was shot in the upper thigh and rushed to St. Michael's Hospital. Police said the officer was in stable condition, and a firearm was recovered at the scene as investigators began to reconstruct what had taken place.
According to police, two suspects were involved in the incident. Officers closed off the area around Bloor and Sherbourne for several hours while investigators worked the scene overnight. They asked anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have relevant camera footage or information, to come forward and assist the ongoing investigation into the shooting of the officer.
Details released about the accused drew particular attention. Police said Stefano Edwards was out on bail at the time of the shooting, on conditions related to weapons offences. On top of that, he was also wanted by police in Peel and Waterloo for firearm offences, meaning he was already being sought elsewhere when the confrontation in Toronto unfolded and the officer was wounded.
The 14 charges laid against Edwards reflect how seriously investigators are treating the case. Alongside attempted murder, he is charged with assault with intent to resist arrest and robbery with an offensive weapon, among the other counts. The attempted murder charge in particular points to the allegation that the officer's life was put directly at risk during the violent encounter at the intersection.
The shooting prompted a strong reaction from the Toronto Police Association, which called for tougher consequences for violent offences against officers. The association noted that in 2026 alone, around 600 of its members had been injured on the job. It described the range of injuries suffered by officers, from being shot and stabbed to being assaulted, and stressed that this level of violence against police is unacceptable.
The case now heads to the courts, where the charges against Stefano Edwards will be tested. For the wounded officer, the immediate focus is recovery after being shot while carrying out what began as a routine call about a stolen e bike.
