Toronto police have made a third arrest in the death of a 79-year-old woman in the city's Witchwood neighbourhood last December. The new arrest marks the latest development in a homicide investigation that has unfolded over more than half a year, gradually drawing more people into a case built around the killing of an elderly resident. With the additional charge, the number of those accused in the death has grown.
The victim has been identified as Jolan Kuhn. She was found dead on December 9th inside an apartment near St. Clair Avenue West and Rushton Road, in a residential pocket of the city. The discovery of a woman of her age dead inside her own apartment set in motion an investigation that would stretch into the new year and beyond.
From the outset, the circumstances of her death pointed to foul play. A post-mortem examination ruled Kuhn's death a homicide, formally turning the case into a murder investigation. That finding gave investigators the basis to pursue those responsible for the killing of the 79-year-old.
The investigation moved forward early in the new year. In January, investigators carried out two search warrants as they worked to identify and locate those involved. Those searches proved to be a turning point, leading directly to the first arrests in the case.
The January searches resulted in the arrests of two men, both 38 years old and from Toronto. Each of them was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Kuhn's death, placing them at the centre of the case as it continued to develop over the following months.
Now police have announced the arrest of a third suspect, a 39-year-old man from Peterborough. He is also facing a charge of first-degree murder, becoming the latest person accused in the killing. His arrest extends the case beyond Toronto, reaching into another community in connection with the death.
With the third arrest, three people are now charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jolan Kuhn. The case, which began with the discovery of her body in December and was confirmed as a homicide soon after, has steadily built toward this point through search warrants and successive arrests. The investigation underscores how a killing in a quiet neighbourhood can lead, months later, to multiple people facing the most serious charge in the country.
