The cruise industry welcomed a record 37.2 million passengers in 2025, according to figures from the sector's main association. Behind the numbers lies a striking shift, with younger travelers and first-timers driving much of the boom.

Once dismissed by many as a holiday reserved mainly for retirees, the humble cruise is enjoying a moment of extraordinary popularity. Far from fading into the past, taking a vacation at sea has become one of the fastest growing corners of the entire travel industry, and the latest figures reveal just how strong that current has become.

A record year at sea

The headline number tells the story on its own. According to the sector's main body, the Cruise Lines International Association, a record 37.2 million passengers set sail during 2025, a figure that comfortably surpasses any that has come before and confirms the industry's remarkable momentum.

What makes that total even more striking is the steady upward curve behind it. As the same figures show, the number has climbed from 31.7 million passengers in 2023 to 34.6 million in 2024, meaning the sector has not only recovered fully but pushed well beyond its earlier peaks year after year.

A younger crowd comes aboard

Clear horizons and open water are drawing a new generation of travelers to the idea of a holiday spent at sea.
Clear horizons and open water are drawing a new generation of travelers to the idea of a holiday spent at sea.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the story lies not in how many people are cruising, but in who they are. According to the association, roughly one third of all cruise guests are now under the age of 40, a clear sign that younger travelers and families are embracing a style of holiday once thought to belong to an older generation.

The industry is also proving remarkably good at attracting complete newcomers. As the figures reveal, around 31 percent of those who cruised were first time passengers, a steady stream of fresh faces that suggests the appeal of life at sea is spreading well beyond its traditional and loyal fan base.

They keep coming back

Crucially, those who try cruising appear to leave wanting more. According to the report, nearly 90 percent of the passengers surveyed said they intend to sail again in the future, the highest level of loyalty the association has ever recorded and a powerful signal of just how satisfied most guests come away feeling.

New waters, new markets

The boom is far from evenly spread, and some regions are surging faster than others. As the association highlights, the single fastest growing market of all was China, where the number of cruise passengers jumped by an impressive 15.8 percent in 2025 compared with the year before, underlining the industry's global reach.

That geographic spread is a large part of the sector's strength. From short getaways to sprawling voyages across multiple continents, the sheer variety of itineraries on offer has helped cruising appeal to an ever wider range of tastes, budgets and nationalities than ever before in its history.

An economic powerhouse

Beyond the holiday snapshots, the industry has become a serious economic force in its own right. According to the association, cruising generated more than 168 billion dollars in global economic impact and now supports around 1.6 million jobs across the world, from shipyards and crews to the many businesses in port towns.

For many coastal cities, the arrival of these floating resorts translates directly into livelihoods. Each docking ship brings thousands of visitors ashore to eat, shop and explore, funneling money into local restaurants, guides and shops, and turning the fortunes of the cruise lines into something felt far beyond the water's edge.

Smooth sailing ahead?

For all the buoyant numbers, the industry is not without its challenges on the horizon. Questions around environmental impact and the strain that huge crowds can place on smaller ports mean that the sector faces growing pressure to keep expanding in a way that is both cleaner and more considerate of the places it visits.

Even so, the overall direction of travel looks unmistakable. With record numbers, a rejuvenated and loyal audience and a firm economic footing, cruising has decisively shaken off its dated image, and for a fast growing share of the world's travelers, the journey itself has become the whole point of the holiday.
