The project was led by the Assyriologist Cecile Michel and the X-ray physicist Christian G. Schroer, working with specialists from the University of Hamburg and the German research centre DESY. Their goal was to combine the patient reading of ancient languages with the precision of modern imaging, two fields that rarely share the same laboratory bench.

ENCI is not a small gadget. It weighs around 420 kilograms and disassembles into eight separate components, which is what makes it possible to carry the equipment into a museum rather than shipping fragile artefacts across the world. That portability turns out to be central to the whole idea, because the most delicate tablets never have to leave home at all.

From the Louvre to Ankara

The scanner was first tested at the Louvre Museum in Paris in 2024, where the team could work with a well documented collection before taking the method further afield. The early results were promising enough to justify a far more ambitious campaign in a place where sealed tablets happen to survive in unusually large numbers.

The researchers then transported the equipment to the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations in Ankara. Over a three-week campaign there, according to the team, they produced 64 tomograms of 48 tablets and objects, building a detailed archive of what lies inside envelopes that no one has opened in four thousand years.

Many of the scanned pieces come from Kultepe, the site of the ancient city known as Kanesh, in central Anatolia. In the 19th and 18th centuries before our era, the city was home to a busy community of Assyrian merchants who had travelled there from Assur, a city far away to the southeast.

These traders ran a long-distance business that moved textiles, silver and other goods across great distances. They kept careful written records, and it is thanks to their habit of documenting almost everything that historians can reconstruct the daily rhythms of an economy that functioned around four thousand years ago.

The clay envelope was not decoration. According to the researchers, it kept the contents of a letter private, showing only the names of the sender and the recipient together with the seal impressions on the outside. Breaking it was the ancient equivalent of tearing open a sealed letter, and it left a permanent record that the message had been read.

For modern scholars, that same envelope has always been a frustrating barrier. Opening it risks destroying a fragile object, yet leaving it closed means the message stays secret forever. The new scanning method offers a way out of that dilemma, letting the words be read while the seal itself remains completely intact.

One of the most striking texts revealed so far is a letter written by a woman named Anna-anna to her husband, Ennum-Assur. In it she appears as an active participant in the family business, managing affairs while her husband was away and dealing directly with the practical problems that came with long-distance trade.

Anna-anna had been trying to recover silver that was owed to the household. According to the account of the letter, the debtor refused to hand the money to her, insisting that he would only settle the debt once Ennum-Assur himself returned. It is a small, human episode that reaches across four thousand years with surprising clarity.

What the method could change

The work was published in the journal npj Heritage Science in 2026, and it points toward a future in which sealed archives can be studied without being physically opened. Museums hold many tablets that have never been read precisely because breaking them was always considered too great a risk to accept.

If the approach spreads to other collections, researchers may gradually recover a library of private correspondence, business accounts and legal notes that has been locked inside clay for millennia. For a field that depends on every surviving word, the promise of reading the unreadable is difficult to overstate.

The story of Kanesh is, in the end, a story about ordinary people who wrote things down and sealed them away. With patience and a heavy machine that can see through clay, some of their voices are being heard again, exactly as they were meant to be read, one careful letter at a time.
